Health and safety

A simple guide to health and safety

The Health and Safety Executive have recently reviewed their guidance on work experience, making it more straightforward for employers who are keen to offer placements.

There is a minimal amount of work activities that a young person cannot do due to the Health and Safety Law. As an employer it is crucial to remember that you have primary responsibility for the health and safety of the young person, and must manage any significant risks.

To help manage any risks, simply ensure that:

  • the young person is made aware of any risks in their Induction, and how they are to be managed
  • check that the young person has understood any risks, and that they are aware of how to raise any concerns they may have
  • keep your checks relevant to the environment that the young person will be working in
  • utilise your previous knowledge and experience when considering health and safety.
